Memory Jar Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 8, 2026
Memory Jar ("we," "our," "us") is operated by Branch Labs. This Privacy Policy explains what information the Memory Jar app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. By using Memory Jar, you agree to this policy.
Our Privacy Approach
Memory Jar is designed so that we never see your memories. Photos, videos, voice memos, transcripts, child profiles, and notes you create stay on your device and in your personal iCloud account. We don't operate a server that stores your content. We don't read it, scan it, train AI models on it, or share it with anyone.
Information You Create and Where It Lives
- Memory content — photos, videos, audio recordings, transcripts, text notes, child profile details (name, date of birth), location tags, and labels — is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData and synced to your personal Apple iCloud account using CloudKit. Branch Labs has no access to this data. iCloud is end-to-end controlled by Apple under your Apple ID.
- Family sharing uses Apple's CKShare technology. When you invite a co-parent or family member, they receive an invitation link from Apple's servers, and the shared family data lives in your iCloud zone — not on any Branch Labs server. Branch Labs cannot see who you invite, or what you share with them.
- Account information — your name and email address, plus a Sign in with Apple identifier or an encrypted password — is stored by Firebase Authentication (a Google service we use only for sign-in). This is the minimum needed to identify you across devices.
- Subscription data — your subscription status, renewal date, and trial state — is managed by Apple's StoreKit and the App Store. Branch Labs does not see your payment information; we only know whether you have an active subscription.
On-Device Processing
Several features run entirely on your device and never send data anywhere:
- Voice memo transcription uses Apple's on-device Speech Recognition. Audio is not sent to Apple or to Branch Labs.
- Photo and audio classification (auto-labels like "laughter," "cake," "music") uses Apple's Vision and Sound Analysis frameworks on-device.
- Face suggestions for multi-child photos run on-device using Vision feature prints. No facial recognition data leaves your device.
- Yearbook narrative generation uses Apple Intelligence on-device when available.
Data We Collect Through the App
The Memory Jar app accesses the following on your device, with your permission, to provide its core features:
- Camera and microphone — only when you tap to capture a photo, video, or voice memo.
- Photo library — only the specific photos you select to attach to a memory. We never scan your full library.
- Location — only when capturing a memory, to optionally tag it with a place. Coordinates stay in your iCloud and are never sent to Branch Labs.
- Speech recognition — for transcribing voice memos on-device.
How We Use Your Information
The very limited information that reaches Branch Labs (your account record in Firebase Authentication) is used solely to:
- Authenticate you when you sign in across devices.
- Send authentication emails such as email verification and password reset.
- Maintain the security of your account.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not advertise, profile, or track you. We do not sell or rent any information to third parties for any purpose.
Third-Party Services
Memory Jar uses these services strictly to function:
- Apple iCloud / CloudKit stores your memories in your personal iCloud zone. Subject to Apple's privacy policy.
- Apple StoreKit / App Store handles subscription purchases and Family Sharing entitlement. Subject to Apple's privacy policy.
- Firebase Authentication (Google) handles sign-in via email/password and Sign in with Apple. Firebase receives your email and an encrypted password (or Apple ID token), and nothing else. Subject to Google's privacy policy.
Children's Privacy
Memory Jar is intended for parents and adults capturing memories of their own children. The app is not directed to and is not intended for use by children under 13. Children do not interact with the app directly; only the parent or family member with the device captures, edits, or shares content. Parents are responsible for the content they capture about their children.
Data Retention and Your Choices
- Access and export: use Settings → Advanced → "Download my data (JSON)" inside the app to export everything you've stored. You can do this anytime, on demand.
- Deletion of memories: delete any memory in the app at any time. Deletes propagate to iCloud and to family members within seconds.
- Account deletion: use Settings → Account → Delete account. This removes your Firebase Authentication record. Memories saved locally on your device remain, but the family link, sharing, and approvals end immediately and cannot be restored.
- iCloud data: you can also delete the Memory Jar iCloud data directly from iOS Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage → Memory Jar.
- Push notifications: manage in iOS Settings → Memory Jar.
Security
All network traffic uses TLS encryption. Account credentials are stored encrypted by Firebase. iCloud data is protected by Apple's standard CloudKit encryption. No system is perfectly secure; we recommend Sign in with Apple plus a strong device passcode.
International Users
Memory Jar is operated from the United States. Information processed by Firebase Authentication may be transferred to and stored in the United States. For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and other jurisdictions with data protection laws: you have the right to access, correct, port, or delete your data. To exercise these rights, use the in-app tools described above or email us at the address below.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notice or email. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
